Land and Housing Reform by Winston S. Churchill, first edition first printing, bound in Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1907 Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1908. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is quite a rarity - significant both bibliographically and to collectors. This is a very early and seldom seen Churchill speech. On 20 April 1907, a young Winston S. Churchill gave a speech on Land and Housing Reform at Drury Lane Theatre in London. At the time, Churchill was a rising star of the Liberal Party serving as Under-Secretary for the Colonies under Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. This is the first edition, only printing of this speech. It is bound by the Liberal Publications Department in a volume containing speeches and pamphlets for the year 1907. Fascinating to note, this appears to be the only printing of the full text of this speech. The speech appears on pages 779 to 782 of Volume I of the Complete Speeches published in 1974, but this 1907 first printing of the speech contains significant amounts of text not included in the Complete Speeches presentation. Further, there are fascinating notes on the introduction of Winston Churchill and on the audience ("The theatre was crowded to its utmost capacity with an audience of 4,000 people.") There is even a notation in the text of a comment shouted from the audience and Churchill's reply. The volume in which the speech is bound contains pamphlets and leaflets published before 16 November 1907. Bound in a black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed buckram covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is very good. The leather spine shows minor wear, particularly at the head and tail, but retains bright gilt and shows no cracking to the leather. The green cloth top board is clean and bright with minor corner wear. The rear board has a bump to the lower corner and some small white spots, but is otherwise sound and bright. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition. The binding is tight, the pages are exceptionally bright and clean, and the top edge retains bright gilt. There is no spotting and no inscriptions. What a very rare and exciting find for collectors. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D11, Woods A10. Very good. Item #000536
