Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, The War Papers, Volume 1 - At the Admiralty, September 1939 - May 1940

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1993. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the first volume of The War Papers, which are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of the Biography. This volume contains documents from the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 to May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries. There were both British and U.S. editions. They are nearly identical in appearance and both are now out of print. Here is the U.S. edition, a truly fine in a fine dust jacket. The red cloth boards and spine are flawless with square corners and bright gilt. The contents are pristine and appear unread. The dust jacket is crisp, clean, bright, unclipped, and showing no wear save for a tiny tear and wrinkle at the bottom of the spine that is hardly noticeable. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302f1. Fine / Fine. Item #000589
