Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume I, Parts 1 & 2, 1874-1900

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1967. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. These two volumes accompany the first volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover the years 1874 to 1900, from his birth, to his early career as a soldier and war correspondent, to his return to England from an American lecture tour in order to embark on his storied political career. The two volumes total 1,290 pages with an index at the end of Part 2. These are the first U.S. editions, attractively bound in maroon cloth boards with a tan linen spine. Both volumes are in genuinely fine condition in good+ dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are immaculate with virtually no wear. The contents are clean and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. Even the text block edges are clean and bright. The dust jackts are unclipped with no losses, but do show a fair amount of shelf scuffing. The dust jackets are now protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.
