The World Crisis

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The first abridged and revised edition of Churchill's The World Crisis was not simply an abridgement, but a genuine first edition in its own right; Churchill made significant revisions and added a new introduction and an entire new chapter on the Battle of the Marne. Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. There were three printings of the U.S. first abridged and revised edition - 1931, 1942, and 1949. All three are quite scarce in the original dust jackets. Here is third printing, near-fine in a very good dust minus jacket. A large book and quality production, it is 866 pages with a remarkable profusion of maps and charts, many of them fold-out. The edition is bound in an attractive, vertically scored red cloth. Here the red cloth binding is clean, bright, and square, with sharp corners, nicely rounded spine, and bright gilt. The only thing preventing this example from being truly fine is slight mottling of the red color on the spine. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. All fold-out maps and charts are likewise perfect. There is a single inked previous owner name on the front pastedown. The black dust jacket of this edition proved particularly susceptible to wear and scuffing, perhaps owing to the size and weight of the book. This example shows some of the typical wear. The jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original $7.50 price on the front flap (though, amusingly, a previous bookseller has crossed through the price in pencil and written "$2.98" below). There is light wear at the front hinge and heavier wear at the flap fold and along the bottom edge of the front face. Irregular chipping at the bottom of the spine occurs to a maximum depth of .5 inch and there is a .75 x .5 rectangular chip at the upper front hinge. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.5.c, Woods/ICS A31(ba), Langworth p.114. Near fine / Very good. Item #001112
