Frontiers and Wars, Proof Copy

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1962. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is an abridgement of Churchill's first four books - The Story of the Malakand Field Force, The River War, London to Ladysmith, and Ian Hamilton's March. Churchill scholar Richard Langworth calls this book "the ideal introduction to Churchill the Victorian war historian." Here is an original Proof Copy, the same size as the British first edition and bearing the first edition dust jacket, but bound in tan card covers and printed on thinner paper. All the illustrated plates are present, but at different locations than in the finished first edition. Thus the page listing all the plates has zeroes under the page number column. Moreover, zeroes are listed in lieu of a catalogue number on the copyright page. The wraps covers and spine are clean and complete, with light wear at the corners. The front cover is torn along the hinge at both ends, still attached in the center. The contents are clean and bright with a single inked owner name and date on the ffep. This proof copy also bears the striking original dust jacket with which it came, which of course did not fold quite correctly over the thinner proof copy binding. The unclipped dust jacket is wrinkled at the edges and lightly soiled overall, with small chips at the head of the spine. The dust jacket is now protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A274.1.a, Woods/ICS A142/1(a), Langworth p.340. Very good / Very good. Item #001453
