Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1979. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most difficult to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. Here is a superior, collector-worthy copy of the first of three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. This copy is near-fine plus in a fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are crisp, clean, and bright. No spotting or previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color. The only trivial flaw noted is a hint of soiling at the tips of the bottom edge of the text block where the massive weight of the text has caused the edges to touch the shelf. The dust jacket is clean and bright and retains the original price on the front flap. There are no losses or tears. The dust jacket retains bright, unfaded spine print. The dust jacket is protected in a removable archival mylar cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e1. Near fine / Fine.
