London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1979. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes was completed in 2019.
The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most difficult to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without.
This is the first of three Volume V Companions, a good plus copy of the British first edition, only printing in a near-fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is clean and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The flaw that prevents this copy from being in better condition is a pronounced vertical dimple at the center of the spine, a clear result of the massive 3-inch thick volume having been laid open and read. There is also an abrasion at the top edge of the front cover and minor shelf wear at the bottom edge. The contents remain clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red stained top edge retains deep, unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges show only very light soiling.
The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original front flap price. The dust jacket remains clean and bright with no losses or tears. The spine print remains bright and unfaded. A hint of wrinkling at the extreme spine ends is the only flaw noted. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.
