Amid These Storms

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A collection of 23 engaging essays on a wide variety of subjects, published in 1932. Published in England as "Thoughts and Adventures", this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. The original dust jacket is extremely scarce and quite striking, bearing a full length photo of Churchill in Flanders, 1916, wearing his French poilu's helmet. Both the orange color on the dust jacket and the red-orange binding proved exceptionally prone to sunning. Further, the coarse cloth binding was also very susceptible to soiling. Consequently truly bright copies are almost never seen. Here is a very good minus copy in a very good minus dust jacket. The orange cloth binding is tight and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The vivid original color is preserved except for a .25 inch strip of sunning at the head of the spine corresponding to a dust jacket loss. There is a faint moisture stain at the upper spine and adjacent cover corners and light overall soiling to the spine. The contents are bright with light spotting confined to the endpapers, prelims, and top edge. We find no previous ownership marks but do note minor scarring from removal of what was likely a small bookseller sticker from the upper left rear pastedown. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original $3.50 price on the front flap. The only losses of note are a strip across the head of the spine to a maximum depth of .25 inch and fractional chipping at the spine tail. The striking illustrated front face remains bright and unfaded with only minor scuffing and soiling. The orange spine panels are sunned, as usual, but still recognizably pale orange. The spine also shows some moisture staining and modest toning. The rear cover is clean apart from two spots at the lower edge where some of the binding dye has bled onto the jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A95.2, Woods/ICS A39(ba), Langworth p.158. Very good / Very good. Item #001966
