Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 2, The Wilderness Years 1929 -1935

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1981. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. This is the second of the three Volume V Companions, a superlative copy of the British first edition, only printing. Condition is truly fine in a fine dust jacket. This is about as good as they come; the book appears unread. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red topstain retains deep unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 September 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The spine print remains bright. We note no losses, tears, sunning, or soiling. Searching for flaws, we can report only a fractional hint of wrinkling at the bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e2. Fine / Fine.
