Marlborough: His Life and Times, first unabridged two-volume edition, deluxe binding

London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. 1947. Hardcover. This set is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This two-volume set is the first printing of the two-volume, unabridged edition in the publisher’s “deluxe” quarter leather binding. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." Marlborough was originally published in four volumes between 1933 and 1938. After the Second World War, paper restrictions forced the publisher to reconfigure Marlborough (the full, unabridged text) into a two-volume edition of 1050 and 1078 pages respectively. There were ultimately seven printings of this two-volume edition. Offered here is the 1947 first printing. For this first printing, there were two bindings offered - the standard cloth binding in a color and style similar to the first edition and a much more scarce "deluxe binding" offered here. This binding features a green quarter leather spine with raised bands and gilt and blind ruled compartments over tan cloth boards with gilt top edge, head and foot bands, and marbled endpapers. The number of sets issued by the publisher in this binding is unknown, but certainly was not many as evidenced by their comparative scarcity. This set is approaches very good condition. The bindings are tight and square. The green quarter leather spine shows no drying, cracking, or appreciable wear, but is lightly sunned. The tan cloth boards are clean with bumped corners. The contents are clean with a hint of spotting confined to the fore edges. The sole previous ownership mark we find is an inked inscription on the Vol. I front free endpaper dated “Nov. 17th. 1948”.
