The Case is Altered

London: The Hogarth Press, 1932. 1st Edition. Hardcover. William Plomer (1903-1973) was born in South Africa to English parents. His first novel brought him notoriety when published in 1925, dealing as it did with inter-racial marriage. Both a novelist and a poet, Plomer was also known as one of Ian Fleming's closest friends for over 30 years.

This first edition copy of The Case is Altered, which was first published in 1932, is very good in a very good dust jacket. The bright green cloth remains bright with square corners and only trivial shelf wear, but shows light overall soiling and the binding is cocked. The contents are tight and crisp, but with light intermittent spotting throughout, heavier on the fore and bottom edges of the text block. There is a decorative bookplate dated "July 1932" on the front pastedown.

The illustrated, light gray dust jacket is clean, unclipped, and unfaded, but with clear tape reinforcement at the top edge as well as a .75 x .125 inch chip at the head of the spine, a .5 x .25 chip at the top edge of the front face, and trivial chipping at the bottom of the spine. Item #003917
