Mr. Churchill and the Atom Bomb

London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office Press, 1952. First edition. Pamphlet. This pamphlet publishes speeches delivered before Parliament by MP Emrys Hughes on 6th, 10th, and 18th March 1952 during the second and final premiership of Winston S. Churchill. This copy is in very good minus condition. This 13-page pamphlet is bound in wire-stitched self-wraps, printed on light, cheap pulp paper stock. This copy’s chief flaws are one inch splits to the top and bottom of the spine. The contents are clean with mild soiling only to the blank rear page. A light horizontal crease runs along the center of the pamphlet.

Emrys Hughes (1894-1969) was a Socialist MP highly critical of Churchill. In 1952 Hughes published Winston Churchill in War and Peace, of which bibliographer Curt Zoller says: "Hughes's book criticizes even Churchill's Battle of Britain speeches and makes some telling points: a polemic worth reading." (Zoller, 2004, p.29) As a lifelong pacifist who was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during WWI, Hughes’s speeches given in the House of Commons debate on Navy, Army and Air Estimates of March 6, 10, and 18, 1952 are unsurprisingly critical of the atom bomb.
