Great Fighters in Lost Causes in The Strand Magazine, March 1933

London: George Newnes, Ltd., 1933. First edition. Periodical. This is the first appearance of Churchill's article "Great Fighters in Lost Causes" in The Strand Magazine, Vol. LXXXV, No 507, of March, 1933. "The figure of a valiant champion of a lost cause faithfully struggling to the end against irresistible odds, 'greatly falling with a falling State,' appeals to our romantic sentiments. But more, it stirs those profound instincts upon which stand the grandeur and dignity of the human race. We rejoice that there were great unyielding souls who fought their quarrels out to the end." As usual, Churchill brings to bear a sweeping command of history when marshalling his intellect and insight; he ranges from Hector and Hannibal to Wellington and Lee. But more to the point, few of the many articles published by Churchill in the 1930s could have been more personally topical. In 1933, champions of lost causes must have been a topic much on Churchill's mind. For Churchill, the 1930s were a decade out of power and out of favor that would be known later as his "wilderness years", during which his persistent warnings and predictions about Nazi Germany went substantially unheeded. Churchill is the first author featured prominently in yellow print within a red box at the lower right corner of the front cover. This substantial article is 10 pages in length with 4 illustrations, filling pages 246-255. This copy is in good condition, complete but with flaws. The covers remain complete and intact with some wear to the extremities, a crease to the lower front corner, and a split along the spine of the lower third of the front cover. The spine is largely intact with a half inch loss of blank paper on the foot and general wear overall. There is a distinct forward lean to the binding. The contents are clean and bright with no markings or spotting. This article was subsequently printed in The Collected Essays, Volume III, pages 82-89.
