A Speech by The Prime Minister The Right Honourable Winston Churchill in the House of Commons August 20th, 1940

London: His Majesty's Stationery Office (H.M.S.O.), The Baynard Press, 1940. First edition. Pamphlet. This is the first edition of one of Churchill's most famous speeches. Churchill's speech to Parliament of August 20th, 1940 was occasioned by the Battle of Britain and famously honored the RAF pilots who almost single-handedly prevented Nazi invasion of England. Churchill encapsulated and immortalized the struggle when he uttered the words: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." The famous bibliographic reference Printing and the Mind of Man, which surveys the impact of the printed word on Western Civilization, singles out this edition of this speech. Printed deep red on light gray paper wraps and wire stitched, this speech pamphlet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is 16 pages in length. Prices of this edition have soared in recent years. Given the fragility of the edition, most copies understandably suffer from significant wear, soiling, tanning, and spotting. Here is a good copy, complete, intact, and internally clean, but showing some customary age and wear. The gray wraps are complete and firmly attached with light overall soiling and spotting. Both binding staples are intact and secure and the covers remain attached with no splits at the spine. The staples show some surface rust, but not enough to appreciably stain the adjacent paper. The chief detraction of this copy is moderate overall creasing; there are no vertical or horizontal lines indicating that the pamphlet has been actually folded, but it nonetheless has manifestly been a bit handled and creased. The contents remain clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A131.1, Woods A60(a), Printing and the Mind of Man (PMM) 424. Item #005084
