Stemming the Tide

London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1953. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the fourth volume of Sir Winston Churchill's post-war speeches. Stemming the Tide is the last volume of speeches published while Churchill was still Prime Minister, containing 52 speeches delivered by Churchill from 7 February 1951 to 11 December 1952, covering the end of his period as Leader of the Opposition and his return to the Premiership after Labour's defeat in the General Election of 1951. There was just a single printing of 5,500 copies of the British first edition. Nonetheless, there are two states of this edition, this being the first state. Cassell did not bind all 5,500 sheets in 1953. In 1961 the remaining sheets were issued in a slightly different binding cloth and wrapped in a solid black dust jacket lacking the first state's decorative leaf border. Hence superior examples of the desirable first state bindings and jackets (uniform in style with the other four British post-war speech volume dust jackets) are in short supply. This British first edition, only printing is good plus in a good dust jacket. The dark red cloth first state binding is square and tight with only minor shelf wear to extremities, but does show mild sunning to extremities corresponding to dust jacket losses. The contents are mildly age-toned but otherwise respectably clean, with no previous ownership marks and light spotting confined to the page edges. The first state dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the publisher’s original price on the lower front flap, and reasonably clean, with only modest spotting and soiling to the white rear face. Nonetheless, the jacket is considerably worn at hinges and extremities, with chip losses to a maximum depth of .875 inch (2.22 cm) intermittent along the upper edges with lesser, fractional chipping to the bottom edges, primarily at the spine heel. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, clear, archival cover. Reference: Cohen A264.1, Woods/ICS A137(a.1), Langworth p.309. Item #005972
