London & New York: Thoemmes Continuum, an imprint of The Continuum International Publishing Group, 2006. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the definitive bibliography of Sir Winston Churchill's published writings. This particular set is noteworthy not only for being complete and in superior condition, but also for being signed by the author on the title page of each of the three volumes.
Ronald Cohen's mammoth bibliographic effort reflects his singular experience as both a collector and bibliographer of Churchill's work. Nearly 25 years of exhaustive research went into this three-volume, 2,183-page Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill. As a work of bibliography, it is worthy in scope and detail to its subject; Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and his rough tally of published work includes 58 books, 260 pamphlets, 840 articles, and 9,000 pages of speeches. No less an authority than Churchill's official biographer, Sir Martin Gilbert, effusively praised Ron Cohen’'s work, calling it: "...a high point - and surely a peak - of Churchill bibliographic research... adding not only to the bibliographer's art, but to knowledge of Winston Churchill himself."
Ron's Bibliography seeks to detail every single edition, issue, state, printing and variant of every printed work authored by, or with a contribution from, Winston S. Churchill. This includes full bibliographical descriptions and background on publications wholly by Churchill, his contributions to the published work of others, articles by Churchill in serial publications, reports of speeches by Churchill in other published works, and other categories of published Churchill contributions and communications. The result is a necessary and greatly improved replacement for Fredrick Woods' then-worthy, but limited and now quite dated bibliographic work on Churchill. While no bibliography is perfect and we have certainly sent emendations to Mr. Cohen over the years, we regard this as among the most diligent and comprehensive bibliographies available not just for Churchill, but for any author - which is all the more remarkable considering Churchill’s extraordinarily prolific output.
The books are attractively bound in blue buckram with gilt stamping and red spine title boxes. The contents are printed on acid-free paper and each volume bears a red satin ribbon marker. This work is indispensable to any serious Churchill collector. That said, availability is limited, as publication was limited to 400 copies.
This set approaches near fine condition. The bindings remain square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners. We note only trivial scuffs and light shelf wear to extremities, including a little wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are immaculate, with no previous ownership marks, spotting, or soiling. The author signed “Ronald I. Cohen” at the center of each title page between the printed volume number and his printed name. Please anticipate the possibility of additional shipping cost for this large, heavy set.
