New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This full, six-volume U.S. first edition, mixed printing set of Churchill's Marlborough: His Life and Times is signed and dated by Churchill in the first volume during his second and final premiership. Churchill signed in black ink in two lines on the front free endpaper recto “Winston S. Churchill | 1952”.

The signed and dated Volume I is the first edition, third and final printing of 1950. Volume II is likewise the first edition, third and final printing of 1950. Volumes III and IV are the second and final printings of 1950. Volume V and VI are the first edition, only printing, of 1937 and 1938 respectively.

Given U.S. editions and the contemporary dates of the printings relative to the signature, we speculate that this book was signed during Churchill’s 1952 visit to the United States. Churchill left London on 31 December 1951, sailing on the Queen Mary to visit U.S. President Harry Truman. Churchill reached New York on 4 January. During this visit, on 17 January 1952, Churchill addressed the U.S. Congress for the third and final time. Churchill remained in the U.S. until midnight of 22 January 1952, reaching Southampton aboard the Queen Mary on 28 January.

Condition of the signed Volume I approaches very good. The green cloth binding is bright and clean, with a slight forward lean, a few scuffs and blemishes, and shelf wear to extremities. The contents are clean with no marks apart from those made by the author. We find no spotting and only modest age-toning.

The rest of the volumes in the set (Volumes II-VI) vary from very good to good plus. The contents of these five volumes are all clean, with no previous ownership marks and no spotting, and only mild age-toning. Volumes II, III, IV, and VI feature square, tight, and unfaded bindings with only modest shelf wear and blemishes, the worst being wrinkling and minor gilt loss to the upper Volume III spine. The notoriously fade-prone Volume V spine shows both gilt loss and concavity, but the binding remains sound.

While the British first edition was issued in four volumes, the U.S. publisher split the first two volumes into two books each, resulting in a six-volume set that is otherwise identical in content. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. This decade saw Churchill pass into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. Churchill may have wondered whether the life history he was writing might ultimately eclipse his own. The first volume was originally published in 1933, the final in 1938, almost exactly a year before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Both the world and Churchill’s political fortunes in 1952 were nearly unrecognizable from those of 1938. Twenty months after publication of the final Marlborough volume, Churchill became wartime Prime Minister, remaining at 10 Downing Street for more than five years. Then, having done so much to win the war, Churchill lost the premiership when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. Churchill led the Opposition for more than six fraught postwar years before the General Election of 1951 returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to 10 Downing Street on 26 October 1951 at the age of 76. 1952, which began with Churchill’s trip to visit President Truman and address the U.S. Congress for the last time, would also see the death of King George IV, the beginning of the long reign of Elizabeth II, the U.S. test of the Hydrogen bomb, and the election of President Eisenhower.

The year after he signed this set, in 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, partly for “mastery of historical and biographical description” on the strength of Marlborough, which was specifically cited and quoted by the Swedish Academy.
